Module VII: The Flor Contmplacion Story

Module VII: The Flor Contemplacion Story
Summary
Why would a government kill an innocent for something that nobody had evidence of? It easy to listen to other people or blame someone but to accuse someone of something they were irresponsible of doing. I can relate to this because that’s the governments fault for thinking they knew who the suspect was. To cancel a court day, that’s not fair because there was no court day and no witnesses involved.
Reflection
Just because the Filipinos are in other countries working, they get punished for something they weren’t responsible for. Flor Contemplacion was charged of murdering a domestic helper, Delia Maga and four-year old Chinese boy, Nicholas Huang. The case was closed for two years and Flor got arrested in Singapore. How it came about with Flor moving to Singapore and becoming a social worker. It was fairly simple because she told her husband Efren that she wanted to move for her love and her children. Efren talked to Russell and tells her they were going to eat at Aunt Neneng and Tata’s place to eat. I mean it was only obvious that Aunt Neneng was a mistress or someone in the middle of Russell’s parent’s relationship because she was always around and became more attached to Efren when Flor left the country. Russell was a really emotional and never held anything back. She was very ashamed of going to school because she’d get teased about her dad having another woman. Yeah, that’s pretty sad that Efren had the nerve to act in the kind of manner he performed. He was married for crying out loud and had kids. I don’t know what he was thinking because in my words, this called “cheating.” Some people just don’t know how to be truthful and faithful to their love one that is not present. Some Filipino men are known as “babaero” or playboy. So after Huang’s death, Delia told Flor to leave because if Huang’s parents catch Flor at their Nicholas’s house, things could get ugly. Sure enough, after the Flor left, Nicholas’s parents came home and the first thing they say is “How’s Nicholas?” It’s really sad because Maga felt she was going to get beaten up. Maga knew she had to tell them what happened to their son. Maga told Huang’s father that Nicholas died because he drowned while he was taking a bath. That was really sad because as soon as she told the father she gets punched in the face multiple times and this is a man that punched with all his might because of the disbelief and the pain after losing his only child. But there’s a catch that whenever a new person or anything new coming into a picture the people are supposed to tell the beginner what they need to be aware of or even what happened in the past for a heads up. It’s rare to have a four-year old die from taking a bath. But the catch was the parents of the boy didn’t tell Maga the boy had an epileptic. Huang’s father killed Maga with a rope leaving Huang’s father without a suspect. Then the police arrested Contemplacion because they’ve learned that Contemplacion’s name appeared in Maga’s diary. So, Contemplacion got sent to jail and made her confess that she murdered Maga and Huang but no one knew. The children visited her at Singapore jail. She told Jon-Jon and Joel to study hard and not let anything neglect their way. Then she asked Sandrex how Evelyn was doing because Sandrex was married and wondered how their relationship was. As a mother, she was always there for children and her husband and wanted the best for them. Like any other Filipino mothers, Flor Contemplacion wanted them to get the best life that she never had. While she was in jail, Filipinos in the Philippines rallied because the government in Singapore felt it was wrong and unfair because they never even went to court on the scheduled court date. I was really hurt by it because she had nothing to do with the murder and got accused. They were just unfair because the police had no proof other than just seeing her name in Maga’s diary. I believe it’s sad that people never had a chance to prove the murdering wasn’t her fault at all. A number of residents from San Pablo appeared in front of Contemplacion’s resident and rallied. Efren’s mistress appeared and lied that she was Contemplacion’s sister-in-law because she was attached to Efren. Flor went home in time before Christmas and asked his mother who Aunt Ellen was because her children tend to always talk about her. Flor asked her mother who “Aunt Helen” was. Flor went down to the fields and slaps Efren in the face without a response. Efren went after Flor and they had a big argument. Then another day and said she would sue Neneng and Efren if they’re together. Finally, the scheduled hang date for her was March 17, 1995. After going back to the cells from hearings, she looked like an actual person. Flor got hanged and died. Her body got sent back to the Philippines. Filipinos burned the Singapore flag and never received the flowers from the Philippine president. While it was getting delivered to her house, the people from San Pablo never wanted to receive the flowers and tore it apart.

Module VI: Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa

Module VI: Bata Bata Paano Ka Ginawa
Being the mother of children from different fathers or mothers is very common today especially for the Filipinos. Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa basically means “Child, child how were you made.” Well this film explained everything one needs to know about how it is raising two children from different fathers.
During kindergarten graduation day, there was a Miss Kindergarten contest and the winner receives 7,000 pesos. Maria “Maya” Gascon’s favorite subject is Math did what she had to do and made her mother proud by doing skit which was more like drama. Another girl who competed against Maya was obligated because the girl’s mother told the girl that she had to do good and putting pressure on the girl telling her the competition is for 7,000 pesos. The skit was supposed to be on a mother-child situation and of course she did her & her mom in a conversational situation. Maya’s mother, Lea was really proud of her which led tears of joy. Because Maya was perfect in the competition, Maya won the 7,000 pesos. The family threw a party for Maya after winning the competition at Maya’s house. While everybody was at the party, Maya had her mouth open sharing stories about how her parents love each other only in bed. It was pretty funny because she couldn’t be quiet and she kept going. She was ahead of the game for a young child because she knew exactly the story to her parent’s relationship. She made sure she understood what’s going on around her surroundings. Kids nowadays always find a way to know the truth about their parent’s background. Maya played a role as “Chismis.” Ding, Maya’s father, scolds Maya for opening her mouth and said that her parents are married only in bed. That’s sounds just about true because Filipinos are known to wander around or shop around. Not so much of the women but the guys who are known as “Babaero.” Earlier in Leah and Ding’s relationship, they have never fought because Leah was in Suigao working and there was no time to see each other. Ojie, Maya’s half brother asked lots of questions like Maya. Both children wanted to know who their mother’s husband was. Maya again would open her big mouth and said Raffy and Lea fought because Maya and Ojie fought because argue about whose father was better. Ding always yelled and shouts. Lea and Elenor, Raffy’s wife talked about Ojie living with Raffy. Then Ding and lea fight because Maya hasn’t eaten dinner yet and it was already late. Ding cared about his daughter so he decided to attempt to cook for her two eggs but didn’t know how. The mom always knows. That’s why a mother is always needed because they lead their children to the people they are today.
At one point, Lea and Raffy talk about Ojie’s custody. Raffy wanted to bring Ojie’s with him to the states after Raffy’s newborn baby comes out. It was hard for Lea and Maya after Ojie’s would be gone from their sites because Ojie’s began hanging out with his dad a lot and Maya was because Maya was being sad. Maya was so used to having her older brother around. Johnny, Lea’s illusionary friend, works with Lea at the Women’s Center. One night, when Lea got home, she wonders where Ojie could be. So with the help of Maya, Maya tells her mom that Ojie went to play billiards and hasn’t been going to Boy Scouts. When Ojie got home, he got busted from his mother because he went home really late. Of course the parents would be really worried because Filipinos care for their children like no other. So, Ojie talks back then Ojie got a slap in the face because talking back to one’s elders is disrespect. In our Filipino culture, it is a sign of disrespect to not obey your elders. Notice we always say Tata, Nana, Manong, Manang, and Ading. So, Lea goes to her son who’s crying and they both apologize to each other. Ojie’s told his mother that he never wanted to go Boy Scouts to begin with. Lea was asked to attend a conference in Baguio and never knew where to put Ojie and Maya. Then she drops them off to Elinor who was pregnant, to take care of them for a couple of days. Raffy was really angry when he found out Lea left because Elinor was pregnant and Lea should’ve known that Elinor was going to give birth soon. Lea got a phone call that her two children, Maya and Ojie were in the hospital because of an accident. She got there and the nurses were really confused because there were two kids, two fathers, and a mother. Another reason why they were confused was because the nurses never knew what Lea’s last name was. So Lea got into a big fight with Raffy and Dino and all of a sudden she decided to just flee the hospital because she was sick and tired of all the things the two men have put her through. Then as she’s leaving, both fathers are begging her not to leave. The principle never knew what kind of last name Lea had so she kept giving Lea attitude that it was wrong to act in such manner and her two children can get expelled if Lea doesn’t choose just one last name for the two of them. Lea then explains to the principle where she works at the Women’s Center and deals with the situation where mothers and children go after getting beaten up or get help. The things Lea was talking about caught the principle’s eyes because Lea wanted to give a helping hand and wanted to know the situation of the children who lost their parents whom one was also a classmate of Maya’s.
Finally Maya and Ojie got Lea a cake on Valentine’s Day and after Dino left them. Dino apologized and said he will be getting married to another woman and will also be expecting a baby from another woman. Lea made a speech at Ojie’s commencement and felt a little embarrassed. Lea realized that her happiness was being the best mother she could and most of all, her children.

Module III: American Adobo

Module III: American Adobo
Summary
Just because we live in the United States, it doesn’t mean we can live a different lifestyle from the traditional Filipino way. We Filipinos must not forget that we have to respect whenever talking to our elders. In modern day, I am amazed by how many younger generation Filipinos practice the lifestyle the traditional way our elders used to live in with respect and speaking the language along with eating the food rather than just eating take out food.
Reflection
Tere made her famous home cooked “magic” adobo. Her friend, Marissa wondered what the special ingredient was. Mike came home late and his daughter was able to sneak out before Mike came home. When she got back, she got the lectures from Mike and then she blew off and talked back to her father. If that was in some other Filipino household, the daughter would’ve got it because that’s disrespectful to talk back to elders. Parents are always right, well at least more than 90 percent of the time. Growing up from a “family first” household, my siblings and I were taught to always respect everyone especially my elders. If my parents were to tell me to do what I have to do before going out, I made sure I do what I have to do before going out. The thing is parents nowadays need to teach their children that the kids are living under their parent’s roof and not to sneak out or even go out late at night. The group of friends consisted of Tere, Mike, Gerry, and Marissa. Tere and Mike had a few words to say to each other that ended up putting another person down. Raul and his girlfriend did their flinging in Raul’s car on their way to Tere’s house. Raul showed up late and brings his White American girlfriend along with him and introduces her to the friends at the dinner table. When she showed up in the dining room, Tere, Mike, Gerry, and Marissa were shocked when they saw met her because her boob was showing due to the things Raul and her have been doing in the car and she never wanted to eat with Raul and her friends at the table. So she preferred to eat in the living room by herself. With families especially Filipinos, we are taught that people aren’t supposed to leave the dinner table until one is done. Raul left the dinner table because his friends were accusing him that his girlfriend’s attitude is negative because that’s disrespect.
This group of friends is interesting because all have different perspectives in life. Mike isn’t happy with his marriage because his wife chooses to play Mahjong with her friends rather than work and supply the needs of her family. In other words she’s not supportive like any other Filipina mothers. Usually in Filipino cultures, the mothers are usually supportive and always being available to their children. In this movie, Mike’s wife is so lazy and could care less about her family and rather play Mahjong. Like we talked about earlier in the semester, Mother Mary never left her son, Jesus be alone. She was there like a real mother attempting to watch everything the soldiers did to Jesus. While all that was happening, Jesus cried out for his mother and she always was there just what children need from their mothers. Tere, on the other hand was disappointed because she was suppose to have dinner with a man but later turned her down because he found someone else. Tere was fine before Marissa left her alone in the house. Tere went on a triumph and ripped apart everything in her house. When Marissa got back, there were no responds from Tere and Marissa called for help and the firefighters came to get her. The funny thing about it was one of the firefighters was the man who got hit by the Santo Nino due to getting knocked over the window by Tere. When Tere woke up from being passed out, she felt butterflies. For Gerry, his mother wanted to set up an arranged relationship with her friend’s daughter. But little did she know that Gerry wasn’t interested in her or even a female. He finally revealed that he was gay and happy. But when his mother arrived in the states, she was brought to the hospital because Chris was dying from AIDS. When they got to the hospital, Gerry’s mother broke down in front of Chris and Gerry and avoided to hold Chris’s hand. She then walked out in disbelief because she dreamt to be like other grandparents and have grandchildren of her own. For Marissa, she was person that thought she was above the game that forgot the lifestyle of a Filipina. Because she’s in the U.S. now, she thought she’s better than everyone else. The man that she was dating for a while, Sam was a cheater and a bastard because even when she was around he was wise enough to do things that were wrong in front of her. For instance, at Mike’s house, everyone was there and Raul’s new Black American girlfriend and Sam got it on in a bedroom in Mike’s house. So, she had a feeling that something was up when Sam was taking a while when al he went to do was shower. Marissa was disgusted. Then Mike went to check up on his daughter and found a guy in her room with the door closed. He was so angry because it’s disrespectful to bring in someone into a bedroom without introducing them to one’s parents. That wasn’t all because Mike went downstairs and started a fight with his wife because she only played Mahjong with her friends again. He flipped the table over and had the game board all over the place. Raul went to check if he had a disease because his White girlfriend was tested HIV positive. Raul was nervous and when all good things came to an end, Raul was tested negative and later found another White woman.
Everyone went to Tere’s restaurant, “Magic Adobo” to eat and had a gathering. Believe it or not, the movie gave away that Tere and the firefighter was going to get married with a fairy tale ending of love at first sight and happily ever after. Then Mike decided to leave the U.S. to live in the Philippines and got dropped off by Gerry and the awkwardness began with Gerry telling Mike that Gerry liked Mike and had feelings for him. Mike felt uncomfortable to the point where Gerry kissed Mike.

Module II: Coup D'Etat & Imelda

Modular II: Coup D’Etat & Imelda
Summary
As a president of any country, the president can only do so much to wish that he or she was doing the right thing to serve their country in every way possible. But as it gets to the 20 years of ruling or such, the president would have to take criticism and realize that the people are struggling and not happy with the lifestyle they’re living. But as we all know, it seems like the Philippines is corrupted because now they don’t obey government laws whatsoever. I mean, there are so many homeless people known as “squatters.” Life is hard in the Philippines if people choose the wrong path. The thing that sucks the most is when the people don’t feel equalized with others because that’s when issues come around and I don’t necessarily mean government but everyday people can only wish for a perfect lifestyle.

Reflection
Having lots and lots of pairs of footwear is something everyone wishes to have. Well as for Imelda Ramualdez Marcos, former first lady of the Philippines owned up to 12,500 pairs of shoes which would be enough for eight years without having to wear the pair twice. She believed that, if she was to find her prince charming, it would be in the clouds and if it was to be real, she believed it would be down on her sand castle. In 1941, the Philippines got bombed due to being sides with the United States. Ervin Berlin composed “God Bless America” but Marcos edited the title of the song into “God Bless the Philippines.” President Ferdinand Marcos and former first lady Imelda slept in two different bedrooms. The beds were enough for two people to sleep on. Both decided to always sleep together. Imelda campaigned for her husband and they were like a “Love Team,” like a soap opera.
In 1966, Ferdinand Marcos became Republican president. The president received lots of money for being close with the Johnsons. As first lady, Ferdinand wanted Imelda to be a housewife with love and beauty. In the 1969 election, Marcos dominated by spending $250 million which led to victory. Then a riot happened and the president proclaimed Martial Law. Marcos closed the newspaper, radio, and T. V. She was almost assassinated with a bolo by a syndicate. Imelda was a really giving person and did so much for the community. She had so much power as a first lady. After she still had over $100 million to play with, Ferdinand made Imelda the Governor of Manila and said if anything was to happen to him, Imelda would become the dictator. It’s not how expensive to be beautiful and not spending. She just took hours to get ready.
In 1972, Marcos went from peaceful to seek your own and she was sent out by Ferdinand for delicate trips. Imelda was among top 10 in the world when it came to richest women and one of few women that had power and was know as “Imeldific.” The cinema center never continued getting built in Manila due to lots of spirits in the sight. She believed that happy and said heart leads to peace. In August, 1983, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino was killed in a successful assassination. So, the Marcos blamed for stealing money. Reagan told Marcos to step down. It was the Americans’ fault for Marcos’ to flee. Ferdinand was then asked to leave the Philippines. Imelda gave away money and Louis Vuitton products and kept 11K jewelry from Ferdinand and 70K jewelry. She was missing numerous pairs of shoes because of Cory Aquino. Marcos died after being shocked that Americans betrayed him. Ferdinand Marcos gained power for 20 years and his body is in a tomb in the state capitol.
In February 1968, everyone in the Philippines was rioting. He was overthrown after four days. In August 1968, Ninoy Aquino was Marcos’s number one rival and got assassinated by the military. General Ver played a role in Marcos’s presidency. Cory Aquino wanted to run for president but wasn’t successful because not everyone could vote. Marcos ended up winning the ballots.
Day one, on February 22, Kernel Henasan and fellow military group set a coup but never planned will. There were 350 men camping at Camp Aguinaldo. On day two, the voice of the Catholic broadcasters got beaten to death by a group military. They knew the code was “846.” Thousands of Filipinos were waiting outside the Malacanang Gate while doing the “Hail Mary” prayers. Marcos and General Johnny talked that Marcos mentioned his people wouldn’t hurt civilians. General Ver thought the president has fled the country but that was false. The president’s military then surrendered to where barb wires weren’t enough to hold the civilians back from getting to the Malacanang. So, Marcos decided to announce curfew from six o’clock in the evening to six o’clock in the morning. About 80 percent of his people avoided him. Finally on day four, Cory Aquino made her public appearance while Marcos made his final farewell and final time seeing him in the Philippines which lost his last hold on power. The U.S. senator and President Marcos were on the phone because Marcos wanted advice on what should he do. Then the senator told the president to “cut firmly.” No doubt that Mr. President was disappointed but his people weren’t appreciating the work he was doing in their country. Marcos fled and later arrived in Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Module I: Nailed & Bontoc Eulogy

Summary
People have beliefs in what they want to do and what not but we cannot count our fellow Filipinos out because from beginning on the bottom, nothing took them away from what they wanted to do and their faith. There are so many of us Filipinos scattered around the work with different jobs from landscaping to CEO’s. Nothing can take us from what we want to do. As a Filipino Catholic living the typical traditional lifestyle, I live my life with no regrets as long as I put Jesus Christ in my heart.

Reflection
Filipinos have strong fate as a Catholic like no other ethnic background and such very religious people. In the film “Nailed,” At age 17, Lucy had a vision of Santo Nino. The pig that appeared to hear was like the vision of Santo Nino being tortured while people fooled them and used them until they couldn’t use them. Lucy had toys on her windows and image of Santo Nino. During holy week, families go to the cemetery to remember their loved ones who have passed away and just pray at the cemetery. There were issues that tombs were stolen as bodies were removed from the caskets. The stolen caskets were being resold without people purchasing knowing. That’s why, when people were getting buried, families and friends learned to stay until their loved one is buried to make sure no scandals happen. I can recall when my uncle, my dad’s brother passed away in the Philippines, there was a person that was hanging out near my uncle’s burial site so one of my family members saw that and was spying on that person to make sure nothing happens. People nowadays are so wise and will do anything to earn money the hard way rather than working. Like we went over in class, all people can be prostitutes believe it or not.
Beneath surface is animism. The interesting part about some Filipinos is the fact that they feel more religious in the Philippines. By that I mean, that’s the only time people go to church is when they’re there. Routines were rituals in the Philippines. During holy week, Filipinos shouldn’t work on Sabbath day or seventh day and we Filipino Catholics only believe in one God. Filipinos were chanting “Marcos all the way!” According to the media, the Marcos couple have bought houses in New York and claimed that it’s false. That’s the problem with people today because people start publicizing rumors that aren’t’ true at all. Filipinos are known for spreading the words fast because of the gossiping or “chismis.” Holy week is when Filipinos show their fate the most by giving back to our heavenly father Jesus Christ. Filipinos pray multiple times a day. On Good Friday, Catholics wear black and don’t eat meat for a good 40 days of Lent. During the 40 days, Catholics aren’t allowed to eat meat on Fridays. On Sunday, everyone go church because we believe Jesus is reason on Easter.
Lucy believed that she had a calling from Christ and had to be crucified on the cross. She claimed that she was with Jesus Christ for 13 years and speaks for the Lord. She was able to receive God’s message. Lucy did this because of her faith. She couldn’t feel her body parts after coming down from the cross. When I saw this, I was shocked because first of all, she’s a woman and the first thing that came to my mind was Jesus is man and there I see a woman doing the things Jesus did before he got nailed to the cross. I believe Lucy was assisted with the men but again, she’s a woman. The soldiers whipped her with leaves. Then when it came down to the nailing Lucy to the cross, I thought they weren’t going to do it. To tell you the truth, I thought the men weren’t going to hang her up on the cross. During the whole practice, the showing almost put me to tears because Jesus Christ died for us and took all the beatings that the crusaders put on him before his death. It was a little traumatizing seeing the nailing on the cross. What caught my attention more was when my family and I went to watch “Passion of the Christ” the movie in the theaters. It was really intense that I cried because he’s guided his people in this world that we are living in today and live life to its fullest because we don’t know what tomorrow will be.
Marlon talked about his grandfather’s experience as an Igurot. His grandfather, Markod was a man who believed that in order to survive new living, on must forget. In April 1898, Americas declared war against Spain. The Spaniards dominated and ruled for three centuries. Then the Philippine War began and his grandfather’s body wasn’t found. Markod who was skilled, never returned home was sent to the United States in 1904. Like all the other Igurots, he lived in the mountains. The Igurots were known to be people who were really black and lived in the mountains. Markod lived a quiet life. When the Americans arrived in the mountains, they wanted the Igurots to go to the U.S. Markod went on a mission because he wanted to see the low lands. He and his wife were also expecting a baby but because the wife knew Markod wanted to go, she allowed him to go. While Markod reached San Francisco, he wrote about his voyage to St. Louis. Later, two Igurots froze to death. Markod and fellow Igurots built bamboo and sent it to the Philippines. The boat looked look a canoe. Markod led the Igurot group and caught the attention of many spectators while one was a woman who attracted spectators. There were Igurots that died in London but Igurots didn’t know where to bury them. The white men didn’t return the bodies of his brothers. Markod never returned home like fellow Igurots.
